Vanity Fair have revealed their Hollywood rich list for 2010 and there are no prizes for guessing first place.
James Cameron, director and producer of Avatar, the highest-grossing film in history, has dwarfed all competition to reach the pinnacle of the magazine’s chart.
Based on estimated earnings, the US magazine revealed that Cameron more than doubled the earnings of his nearest competitor with a staggering $257m (£159.4m) of estimated income. Second place, the actor Johnny Depp, made an estimated $100m (£62m), with perennial top ten ranking director and producer Steven Spielberg taking third spot with $80m (£49.6m).
Director Christopher Nolan was the first Brit on the list in fourth place, with an estimated $71.5m (£44.3m) in earnings, and his Inception star, Leonardo DiCaprio ($62m (£38.5m)), rounded off the top five.
The list revealed that Cameron and Nolan earned the majority of their 2010 incomes from one film, Avatar and Inception respectively, as did DiCaprio. Spielberg continued his presence due in large part to theme park royalties while Johnny Depp’s second place was achieved with fees and backends from three films, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates 4 and The Tourist.
Elsewhere, Kristen Stewart was the highest ranking female star, in 13th, beating her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, who place 15th, by an estimated $1m – the difference in their fees for other projects On The Road and Water For Elephants). They were both beaten by their other co-star Taylor Lautner, who was the youngest entry in the top ten, reaching ninth place.
With a whole host of new entries, the top 40 list saw quite a change from its 2009 counterpart, with hard-working actors such as Depp and Downey Jr. finding themselves almost 20 places higher up the list. Last year’s charttopper Michael Bay has disappeared from the list entirely.
Vanity Fair’s list is limited to “creative figures” and does not include earnings from “non-film-related projects”.
