The shocking revelation that Cheryl Cole might have mimed some of the words to her X Factor results show performance of new single Promise This has got the tabloids in a frenzy.
Well of course she did, and if she hadn’t, it would have been rubbish. What do people want on prime time television, a shaky Auto-Tuned rendition of the new single that they’re about to buy on iTunes or a near-exact replica of the average pop-tune laced with a sexy dance that will please their ears and eyes? Sometimes I wonder if pop-fans even know themselves?
As live, but not run by live
Apparently Cheryl’s fans feel cheated – well if they want quality live performances, maybe they should become fans of a proper band rather than Cheryl Cole.
I’ve nothing against the 27-year-old Newcastle lass, she’s done well for herself – but if anyone believed that she was going to stand up in front of 15 million people on live television, jump around like a whirling dervish and also sing 100 per cent live (whatever she may have said in advance), they were surely deluded.
For what it’s worth, I think Cheryl is very good at miming, it’s not as easy as it looks (see England footballers attempting national anthem for confirmation.)
In order to sing live, Cheryl would have had to cut out the raunchy dance routines and spinning around under the hands of hunky dancers … is that what the fans want? … Is that what the tabloids want? … I don’t think so … what they all desire is pseudo soft porn with a slightly worse soundtrack, and that’s what Cheryl and commercial pop delivers.
But glancing down the list, it’s amazing the Cheryl Cole ‘fiasco’ even made it into the papers with the other big story doing the rounds today … apparently hi-tech Apple® products are now topping children’s Christmas lists … blimey.
Yes, that’s right … the frankly shocking results from the Duracell Toy Report has revealed that of the 2,000+ children quizzed, almost two thirds of them would put the heavily advertised and desirable iPod or iPad at the top of their Santa’s wishlist.
What? Surely not?
According to the Mirror, ‘Apple gadgets have knocked cheaper, traditional toys off children’s Christmas lists.’
Well I for one couldn’t have seen that coming … when I was a kid and had no concept of (or need to know) the price of items, I still always asked for a cup and a ball on a string … what have the children of today become, money grabbing, Apple® advertising addled fiends?
With every song now released on iTunes, every TV programme having an iPhone app, and every talent show releasing their songs instantly into the MP3 ether … why would the kids want a good looking, fashionable device with which to engage the modern world? It’s a mystery to me.
Perhaps the most interesting question about this story is what did the third of kids want who didn’t ask for an iPod … and why don’t they get with the programme?

Rachel, it’s very easy for you to bet our money but why not use your own next time you want to place such a nonchalant wager?
Who cares if she mimes or sings on a show, really does it affect your life… No some people really have go nothing better to do then bitch and moan about what people did or didnt do, get a grip concentrate on real life folks, we all know she can sing or she would not of sold the number of albums she has, and I can bet your bottom dollar that the people who moan have still brought the albums or listened on the radio if you dont like it, then stop watching and listening.
I genuinely don’t think she mimed it. A lot of the song was different from the recorded track, when she lent backwards over the dancer she missed a few notes and looking at her it looked like she was singing live and reasonably well. It appears that people are unable to accept the fact that maybe she can sing. I was shocked to be honest, but if she won a reality competition that involved singin live then she was clearly able to sing at some point, so why do people assume she can’t now?
