Google, Apple and Microsoft play second fiddle to Starbucks and poker

The ultimate Internet celebrity ... but does she like poker and coffee too?

Technology news might be dominated by talk of Apple iPads, Google Chrome and the battle for search engine dominance … but the real stars of the Internet are much more fun.

They’ve done it with people, but this time our friends over at Famecount have come up with yet another mind boggling matrix, this time to determine the most prolific companies in the Internet’s hottest sector, social media.

Famecount give every company a fame index percentage score based on the number of their followers and subscribers across three of the biggest social networks, Twitter, Facebook and Youtube (which isn’t exactly a social network but does have a subscription system.) All scores are comparative to the ultimate social media star Lady Gaga, who scores 100 per cent on the index.

Based on these stats, the biggest consumer brand in the Internet world is Starbucks. Yes indeed, the Seattle coffee giants score a whopping 69.7 out of Gaga thanks to just under 7.5 million Facebook fans, nearly a million Twitter followers and 6,000 odd Youtube subscribers (presumably people prefer to read about coffee rather than watch videos of others drinking it?)

In hot pursuit is the soft drink magnate Coca-Cola who score 57.8 out of singing star, with brands like Skittles, Oreo, Red Bull and Woot all placing in the top ten.

Using the same methodology, the biggest media company is Texas Hold ‘em Poker which has an astounding 18.9m Facebook fans, as well as 135,000 Twitter followers scoring it 98.2 per cent on the index, perilously close to being as popular as the crazy songstress her self (well she did sing Poker Face.)

Surprisingly, Facebook is only third in the list (71.1%) and Twitter languishes 5th (64.9%), but both are better placed than Google (61.9%) and Apple iTunes who (60.9) who only just scrape into the top ten.

So what can we glean from this smorgasbord of stats?

Er, that people who like using social networks also like gambling and drinking deeply caffeinated drinks to help them concentrate in their interactive gaming experience …

… phew, there was me thinking these were the last days of Rome …

… as you were …
