Best Internation Newcomers Black Veil Brides

The world’s hard rock elite took over The Brewery in London last night for the Kerrang! Awards Fuelled By Relentless Energy Drink.  Hundreds of young British fans gathered outside the venue to see their favourite rock stars walk the red carpet that yesterday, in the name of rock, was coloured black.

In the award show, hosted by colourful Slipknot member Corey Taylor and Anthrax’s Scott Ian, the Best British Band Award went not to the 2008-2010 winners Bullet For My Valentine, but instead was won by Surrey rock band You Me At Six, who finally overcame Bullet For My Valentine in their fourth consecutive year of nomination.

Recently returned from LA, where the five young band members have recorded their third album, You Me At Six drummer Dan Flint said he was looking forward to the summer.  “Hopefully we will have a few tracks out in the summer and the album out in September,” he said. “We are stronger than ever and we are moving forward.”

Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds To Mars won a double by taking home awards for Best International Band, their third win in this category, and Best Single for “Hurricane”.

When arriving on the black carpet, Leto commented on the rumours that were spread by MTV Canada a month ago, saying that the band would break up after the summer:  “We’re going to tour until November and then we’ll take a bit of a break probably. It has been a bit of a beat-down, we’re a bit burnt out but we’re surviving.“

The York metal band Asking Alexandria, who have been touring in the US, notably performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, won the Best British Newcomer award.  Despite their recent success, the band accepted their award with a pinch of rock modesty, saying “We actually won something for once and it’s a bit of a surprise because we’re f*cking sh*t to be honest.”

Best International Newcomer was won by young Californian five-piece Black Veil Brides.  Their singer, Andy Six, whose dramatic looks seem to be influenced by Kiss, said: “This award means more to us than any award that we have ever won before, especially because of the fact that it’s international.”

Six was positive about the future of his band: “You can’t be anything else but confident. In any line of work people are afraid to admit dominance. They don’t want to be great, they want to be good. We want to become the biggest band in the world and nothing should stop us.”

Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon had quite a different attitude.  After winning the Kerrang! Award for Best British Newcomer 2006, they had since then been voted Worst Band of the Year both 2008 and 2010.  But last night they finally got their second Kerrang! Award when they won for Best Album with “There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It.  There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret.”

The tattooed singer Oliver Sykes said: “We had no idea we were going to win so this was pretty mind-blowing to us. We just came here for the party and free booze.  We are happy with what we’ve got; we don’t want any more.”

Korn's Reginald Arvizu and Jonathan Davis at The Brewery

Sheffield was again honoured as Def Leppard received the Kerrang! Inspiration award.  Three other rock giants were honoured with special awards with Ozzy Osbourne getting a Kerrang! Legend award.  The Prince of Darkness wasn’t present but he sent his son Jack Osbourne to the ceremony to accept the award on his behalf.

American metal band Korn was awarded with a place in the Kerrang! Hall of Fame, and singer Jonathan Davis was there to enjoy the show: “It is the most entertaining award show I know.”

My Chemical Romance, who received five nominations, won their fifth Kerrang! Award when their song “Na Na Na” took home the award for Best Video.  The band, led by singer Gerard Way, thanked Kerrang! in a video message from the US.

Giving fans a taste of the aftershow party, American punk band All Time Low celebrated their win in the Best Live category in true rock spirit, with singer Alexander Gaskarth tweeting: “I’m going to drink absinthe until my organs turn to dynamite, and I launch myself into an earth-threatening meteor and save the day.”
