I sit here in my London recording studio with great anticipation of the promised wonders of the 2011 ADE Amsterdam Dance Event. I have been told by many people that the corridors and lobbies at the conference are full of record executives walking around listening to music, sipping coffee and making deals there and then, it sounds like a perfect place to make the next steps towards superstar DJ/producer.
Indeed the first signs are promising, the ADE delegates web-site, for which I have paid a handsome sum on money to be a converted member, looks very promising. There are tools to search for the record companies and then from there, send confidential emails to all the executives to organize hook ups. I have a wonderful vision of skipping from one meeting to the next, cutting deals, talking like Terry Tibbs and sealing global deals with a handshake and a nod to the bar.
I am quite lucky as I wont be going alone, on the Wednesday I shall be meeting Armada Records who I am signed up to with my fellow band members of the ‘Nightstylers’, Anred Galea and Patrick Ruane. These guys have been making hits for years and know all the big guns so it will no doubt be a very entertaining networking frenzy.
Also my business manager Al will be out there so there will be much banter, laughter and deals. Al is great full of positive energy and has been masterfully building up Bimbo Jones, my production/remix outfit with Lee Dagger.
This is my first time visiting ADE but I have been to the Miami Winter Music Conference 4 years running. There is more emphasis in Miami on the partying rather than the business, we are looking at a good 80/20 split to the hedonistic.
Miami is sweet as good business opportunities are most likely to come from conservations at completely bonkers parties. I met Rita Campbell at an outrageous event at the Hotel Raleigh there 2 years ago, we have written a tune called ‘Let It Go’ (coming on Ispirato records) and she also introduced me to Simon Bartholomew (Brand New Heavies) with whom I am writing a disco album, you never know when you will bump into someone life changing!
Hopefully ADE will be a darn sight cheaper than Miami, at the International Dance Music Awards where we were nominated for Best Remixer, a Barcardi and Coke in a small plastic glass was $27, a bottle of Champagne out the back of the hotel was $2500, insane prices.
It is rumored that ADE has more of a leaning towards the business side and less toward the partying, we will have to see about that as the people I know there are party animals and will can go for days before they run out of energy and lets face it, we will be in the heart of Amsterdam!
A day pass for ADE is about 250 euros, flights and hotel will set you back £200 if you go Easyjet and sleep cheap. If you are going, I’ll see you at the lobby bar, if you are not, I fill you in with the action later!
