A big moment for Take That fans as Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow unveiled the first fruits of their long-awaited reunion after 15 years - Shame, a duet for Robbie’s October Greatest Hits album.
The pair dropped in to Chris Moyles’ R1 show for a jovial chat and the first play of the song, a countrified ballad with a large dollop of Back For Good in the chorus and little “lifts” from a variety of familiar tunes including The Beatles’ Blackbird.
The lyric bears the hallmarks of Robbie’s wit, an honest account of the breakdown of the Williams/Barlow relationship, a little nostalgia at time lost and an “isn’t it great we’re all friends again” conclusion.
But the video…well….that’s something else….
Rob and Gary have gone for the full Brokeback Mountain, homoerotic fantasy, eyeing each other longingly in the bar, dispensing with their ladyfolk and ripping their clothes off for some manly rock climbing. Perhaps it’s a wry comment on the whole Clegg/Cameron situation?
It’s tongue-in-cheek naturally but it was enough to shock Eamonn Holmes on Sky News who reckons it might backfire. Co-host Sarah-Jane Mee, Take That correspondent for the event, complained that female fans will feel shut-out if the big two are so obviously in awe of each other. Safe to say it’s not the vid that’s going to break Robbie, newly married or not, in the US.
Try as he might during the interview, Chris Moyles couldn’t get Rob and Gary to release the Take That tour dates due next Summer. But Barlow was pretty clear that Williams would go back to his solo career after the reunion album, which will be released in November, and the completion of a Summer tour.
And Williams revealed that he thinks he’s 37 when he had to be told on air that he’s actually 36. Still, a rock star content to believe he’s older than he really is must be in a happy place right now.
