The Libertines are to perform at this year’s Glastonbury, a report in The Sun newspaper has revealed today. It is claimed that the band will play The Other Stage at this year’s event in Somerset.
But the NME has been in contact with front man Carl Barat to confirm the band’s attendance at the event, and the musician told them: “It’s been mentioned, but I’ve not had an actual dialogue yet with the other band members.”
He did confirm he would open to bringing The Libertines back for more shows. He said: “It’d be nice to do a few, if we get the old machine up again. There’s all sorts of things to think about, with all that’s going on.”
Band member Pete Doherty, who sparked The Libertines’ demise when fired from the band for his drug use in 2004, had recently confirmed on his blog that the band’s member had phoned about “some offers for Libertines gigs.”
The band made a comeback at last year’s Reading and Leeds Festivals.
An insider told The Sun: “Although there are no signs of new songs, the boys have realised that they can take a nice payday by playing each summer.
“They begged for more than £1 million for Reading and Leeds in 2010 and, although they won’t get as much for Glastonbury, it will still be a good pay day.”
The Libertines join a long list of rumoured acts for Glastonbury 2011, with U2, Beyonce and Coldplay all but confirmed as headliners of The Pyramid Stage.
