Oh I love Christmas. It’s only during the season of good will to all men that in the same week the Business Secretary is stripped of his most important duties that he could also appear on Strictly Come Dancing.
In hindsight, perhaps Vince’s decision to take part in this year’s BBC dance show Christmas Special may look as misjudged as shouting his mouth off to Telegraph journalists dressed as Twickenham constituents.
It was always a risk for a cabinet minister charged with the task of reigniting the nation’s stagnant economy to appear in such a jovial show … but after the week ‘Saint Vince’ has had, I’d imagine he’ll be hiding behind the sofa on Christmas Day for more than just the Doctor Who special.
Now, we know that Vince has a history on the dance-floor, so he’s probably not going to embarass himself with his Foxtrot, but for a man who has seen his judgement called into question this week after the ‘Sky-gate’ (™ Beehive City) revelations, one fears this BBC One prime-time cameo won’t do the Liberal Democrat many favours when it comes to earning new-found respect.
Vince is currently the clear favourite as the next cabinet minister to lose his job – and although his ballroom antics might win him a few new friends with the boozed up Christmas Day public – one must wonder if even a magical 40 score from the judges in this TV extravaganza (filmed in November – happier times for Vince) would be enough to earn him brownie points with his coalition paymasters.
I’m sure we can expect Santa hats and coalition dance partner jokes from the start …
Bad timing? Er, perhaps …
I suppose the only consolation for Vince is that the whole event takes place on the BBC.
The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special is on BBC One at 7pm on Christmas Day
