Yes, it’s Christmas … the season of list shows, polls and ‘non-news’ news stories, so here’s one for you to peruse whilst you digest your turkey …
Apparently, there is nothing that soap fans want more in 2011 than for Coronation Street lesbian sweethearts Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) and Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) to tie the knot.
And this is no idol research either … these are the thoughts of the readers of Inside Soap magazine … yes, people who love soap operas so much they have to read the story-lines in intimate detail a month before the shows are aired … they’re serious fans … I think.
Well, anyway, 44 per cent of the 1,000 or so soap-heads polled said that a Corrie lesbian wedding was top of their 2011 wishlist, and continuing the gay theme, the second most popular answer attracting 21 per cent of the vote) was a civil partnership between EastEnders’ Syed Masood (Marc Elliott) and Christian Clarke (John Partridge).
The poll was conducted against the backdrop of rumours that Corrie’s Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) is to marry an old flame Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou) in the soap’s first civil partnership some time in the New Year.
The irrespresable Sean was also voted the character that viewers want to see more of next year … I presume they mean on screen rather than naked? It’s hard to tell with these soap people.
Apparently Corrie’s Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaveris) is the soap character that fans most want to find love, followed closely by EastEnders’ Jean Slater (Gillian Wright).
The poll also reveals that soap fans want less extra marital affairs and more happy love stories next year … 2011 will feature a royal wedding afterall.
