The BBC have some pretty serious choices to make in the next few weeks: axe 6 Music to save money, keep it running and find savings elsewhere … or the third way, see if Ian Beale can lend them a few million quid and encourage him to play some decent music in Kathy’s Caff.
Do you know how much money Ian Beale is charging for his misleadingly branded ‘Credit Brunch’ – £7.95, that’s how much, and the worst thing is, you have to listen to Radio 1 whilst you try and digest your battery eggs and gristle.
For eight quid, you’d expect a proper chef to be grilling your bacon, but what do you get … Bianca Jackson, and her mind’s only half on the job, what with her hundred or so kids and massive attitude problem. At least if Ian himself was manning the grill you’d take some consolation in the knowledge he has formal catering training from the prestigious Walford Community College.
Just to put things in perspective, a full English in Roy’s Rolls (Coronation Street) will only set you back £2.95, plus you get a cup of tea and the chance to have it served to you by a post op-transsexual – now that’s value.
Even Il Nosh, the pseudo-sophisticated eatery in Hollyoaks can do you a breakfast cheaper than Ian, begging the question, just how much money has Ian got?
With minimum wage staff, extortionate prices (try the Beale.L.T. sandwich for £5.95 or cake of the day at £3.95), a chip shop and several properties in and around The Square, the 6 Music annual budget is chicken feed to London’s very own Ronald MacDonald.
So what can people do?
It’s a simple win win situation.
Send Ian your unwanted DAB digital radios for the caff (you won’t need them soon anyway – unless you’re the1 Xtra listener.) Hopefully he’ll install at least one of these devices. After all, he’s a man of the people and once he knows that 6 Music exists, and people like it – he’ll do the right thing, and dig deep…
.. and if he doesn’t, at least you might get a slightly better soundtrack on Eastenders for a few months until 6 Music ends up in the ground with Dirty Den.
