Matt Smith’s in the trailer, but Nigel Planer stars in Doctor Who Live

Doctor Who goes on the road ...

Although Matt Smith won’t be treading the boards as part of BBC Worldwide’s Doctor Who Live 25 date tour extravaganza, he has taken the time to make a trailer for the audio visual spectacular that was released today (see below).

Matt and companion Karen Gillan will be on screen at the show in video sequences filmed exclusively for the event but fans won’t get a chance to see the pair perform live in front of their eyes.

However, all is not lost, because Young One’s fans will instead be treated to a generous helping of Nigel Planer who will be starring in the live show as Vorgenson, ‘the greatest showman in the galaxy’. Apparently the character was ‘adapted’ for the tour by Doctor Who supremo himself, Steven Moffat, so expect good things.

The stage show is based on Doctor Who, but looks like being an all round variety family day out, with illusionists The Twins joining Planer on stage. They’re so good, they’ve done tricks for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie … how about that. Unfortunately Paul Daniels wasn’t available as he’s doing Strictly Come Dancing … maybe next year Paul.

Expect action from the Cybermen, Daleks, Scarecrows, Oods and Silurians amongst others in a show which will fuse lights, video, music and stage play into what will hopefully be a pleasing experience for all … well let’s hope so with tickets starting at £25 a pop.

Nigel Planer said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining Doctor Who Live and this role is something of a boyhood dream come true. My character Vorgenson, who has been developed specially for the show by Steven Moffat, is the Greatest Showman in the Galaxy and using his incredible invention, ‘The Minimiser’, he can make any Doctor Who character appear on stage as part of his travelling show dedicated to his hero. This live tour brings all the magic of the TV show together with a host of incredible effects. I hope that I can survive visiting nine cities in October sharing a stage with eleven Doctor Who Monsters and a flying Dalek in tow!”
