This year’s National Television Awards took place earlier this evening at a star-studded ceremony in The O2 Arena. Broadcast live on ITV and hosted by Dermot O’ Leary, I’m A Celeb… winner Stacey Solomon and runner-up Shaun Ryder performed a duet to open the proceedings. The X Fact winner Matt Cardell was also on hand to entertain The O2 Arena crowd with a performance.
In one of the shows highlights, two young audience members, Abby and Lauren, were plucked from obscurity to present the Talent Show award. The lucky pair got to hand the award to Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole as The X Factor won the category.
Eastenders was the big winner of the evening, picking up three awards including the prestigious Best Serial Drama. Lacey Turner won Best Serial Drama Performance and Ricky Norwood won Best Newcomer. The whole cast, including recent departure Lacey Turner, took the stage to collect the evening’s final award and celebrate before Dermot O’ Leary wrapped up the show.
The Special Recognition Award was presented by last year’s winner Stephen Fry to British institution Bruce Forsyth. With over 50 years of entertaining the nation, Brucie received a standing ovation as he took to the stage to the Sammy Davis Jr. song Rhythm of Life. During his acceptance speech, Forsyth teased the crowd with news of his retirement before emphatically stating, ‘I’m not bloody going to!’ He collected the award under a huge silhouette of himself in the classic Brucie pose.
David Jason beat fierce competition to win Best Drama Performance for A Touch of Frost, and Ant & Dec won for the tenth consecutive year in the Best Entertainment Presenter category, beating show host O’ Leary.
