Tonight’s TV: Britain’s Next Top Model with Elle Macpherson (ep 2)

Things heat up in the house

They’ve been whittled down to the final 14, but there’s no time to rest on your laurels in Britain’s Next Top Model …

The girls arrive in a London studio to be met by a stern faced Charley Speed (who they all still fancy) … he hams it up good … “If you thought the modelling academy was tough, you’re in for a big shock, because this competition is about to really kick off” … yes that’s right, it’s belt and braces time for the girls, they’re going to have to pick a prop and stand in a giant picture frame, how will they cope?

“It was quite daunting, obviously” says Joy … yes it must be difficult, after all there are six props to choose from and you’re only allowed one. Not only do you have to make the near impossible choice between a bowler hat, bunch of flowers, banana, a bag, an umbrella and a fur thing, but then you have to stand holding it in a picture frame … my goodness, no wonder so many top models have wild lifestyles to escape from the pressures of the industry.

The winners party on whilst the losers stew in the street

As with life, in BNTM, there have to be winners and losers, so Charley divides them into two groups and lets the better performers enter the BNTM house first … woo hoo. The girls can’t believe their luck when they find the house is littered with goody bags, well more like goody sacks … as Susan from Ireland puts it “I couldn’t grab enough stuff, I felt like such a beast!”

But life in the house won’t all be life size pictures of Elle Macpherson (a bit weird) and complimentary hair straighteners, this is going to become a boudoir of bitching over the next few weeks … and the tensions have already begun.

The losing ‘picture frame’ people had to sit outside the house for the best part of an hour before the winners let them in – about 45 minutes too long in their opinion – I can feel trouble brewing before a photo has been taken in anger.

Even saucier ...

However, there is a job to be done, and you guessed it, the only way to get that job done is to get the girls into skin tight shiny gold leotards and make them parade up and down a catwalk. It turns out that Holly walks like “every designers nightmare”, Tiffany has “a lot of work to do, it’s such a shame” … and there are tears before bedtime in the BNTM house. No matter, Kirsty and Amelia excel in gold, then at London Fashion week, so well done them.

The photo challenge this week is rather racy as the girls are put into pairs with a male model and expected to cavort around in underwear with the hunks. Although the girls are told “this is not a page three shoot”, you can’t help but feel that the producers are pushing them a little too far a little too soon as they are expected to kiss one another and lick strange men’s bodies … and if they can’t or won’t … they will be judged accordingly.

and one for luck ...

It’s a field day for causal perverts who watch the show, but a rather sad day for the show as it seems to cross the line slightly between encouragement and exploitation of these young girls and their hopes and dreams.

Well, I guess that’s what they’ve got to look forward to in the fashion industry, so why not get them primed on TV first?

As is customary, I’m not going to reveal who goes home this week … but the person who does delivers the predictable line, “I just don’t think I want to be model” … yeah, sure you don’t …

Then there were 13 …
