It's all gone wrong

The biggest trends on Twitter today are about Twitter itself, something that hasn’t happened for literally days when the micro-blog released details of #newTwitter which will allow Tweets to contain pictures and video.

Currently five of the top ten UK trends are about a Twitter hack, including #twitterhack, mouseover & onmouseover.

‘Twitter Security Flaw’ is top of the charts in the blogosphere, led by this Tweet from tech site Mashable who say, “Twitter Mouseover Security Flaw Affecting Thousands of Users [WARNING]”

Apparently there’s some sort of nasty Javascript bug out there that opens third party websites and causes URL redirects just by a Twitter user rolling their mouse across an offending link.

Learn more about the attack from the guys over at guardiantech who said, “The Twitter hack explained:http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/sep/21/twitter-bug-malicious-exploit-xss #twitterhack

Although a Twitter spokesperson said, “This should now be fully patched and is no longer exploitable”, that hasn’t stopped the incident becoming the talk of Twitter.

The charity Barnardos Tweeted, “Note to readers- tweets from our account in last 3 hrs were not made by us & instead caused by a twitter security flaw” and Chrisvoss confirms, “Twitter Mouseover Security Flaw Affecting Thousands of Users.”

Madguy000 said, “techcrunch has done amazing legwork in 1 hr to find out the origins of the twitter attack” … yeah, we here at the Beehive haven’t done that much I’m afraid …

PeteOMalley puts things in perspective, with his message, “Sitting here in the aftermath as survivors of#twitterhack we now know exactly how it must have felt for our grandparents during the Blitz.”  And Rachwest said, “Blimey that was a bit intense…come on Twitter brains, sort it out! I thought the fail whale was bad enough.”

Alwayskrispy speculated that, “Kanye’s red suit caused the #twitterhack” but then PeteOMalley interjected again with some words of wisdom, “Now #twitterhack is over we can all learn from this crisis, take stock of our lives, then go back to tweeting about when we last took a shit.”

Cynical_Sar was not happy, stating, “Seriously annoyed about #twitterhack for many reasons. I don’t actually understand the point of hacking and it wastes my time.”

Finally, ScepticBarista (who I’ve heard makes a great coffee) said: “ #twitterhack just been reported on BBC radio1 news. Advice is stay off twitter website … 3rd party apps should be OK.”

Oh dear, I’ve just been on Twitter for the last hour, does that mean I’ve been hacked now too?

Right, well I’ll see you tomorrow, if there’s a Twitter left to report on.
